These are the latest development in food scale design, using electronics instead of a purely mechanical movement to weigh an item.
For most domestic scales the power comes from replaceable batteries with mains powered ones mainly being reserved for commercial use.
With the advent of cheap microprocessor controlled scales they now can come with various built in calculators. These are a help those on diets and who wish to calculate calories in a given weight of food or ingredients.
Designs of digital food scales range from those mimicking spring balance scale design, to the ultra modern ultra thin flat pad design.
These designscome in plastic, glass and stainless steel, where you supply the food container if the type of food requires it.

Mechanical kitchen food scales (Spring Balance Food Scales) are also sometimes referred to as “traditional design” to now differentiate them from digital scales or electronic kitchen scales.
They are easy to use and require no batteries and generally cost less than a digital food scale.
There are many designs available, from free standing models, to those that can be hung on the wall.
Materials range from plastic to chrome metals or combinations of the two.
Designs of scale range from the modern to the retro look.
These are the oldest design for weighing scales, typically with a mechanism being made out of cast iron.
The weights traditionally tended to be iron or brass and weighing pans being made out of iron, tin or brass.
Sets of attractive weights can be bought separately, in brass or chrome plate.
They are accurate and reliable, but today they are often bought for their looks as much as their function.
More contemporary designs have used stainless steel or chromed metal so that they can be left out on display in the modern kitchen and look fashionable as well as functional.

These digital scales can provide with extra features not found on the mechanical design kitchen scales.
They tend to be battery operated so look for auto shut-off as well as manual shut-off, you are less likely to end up with a flat battery should you forget to switch the unit off.
Some can be found with a built in kitchen timer.
* Useful for measuring small quantities as accuracy to + or – 0.1oz (2g) is possible with many designs
* Auto-off times vary, if you think 1 minute is to short a time before switching off look for one up to 4 minutes
* Lithium batteries for long life with some designs
* If you don’t like looking for less common battery sizes buy one that uses “AA” (MN 1500) (R6) or “AAA” (R03) sizes
* Large LCD display
* Built in calculator for calorie counting with diets
* Some have a liquid volume measuring facility
* Some have an add and weigh zero feature, sometimes called a “tare” feature, this means that it will automatically deduct the weight of the container, whatever it is (plate dish or baking tin), so that you only weigh the ingredients or can zero the scale to add and weigh further ingredients to those already weighed in the container
* Greater accuracy can be provided by some digital scales, weighing to an accuracy of + or – 0.1oz (1g), useful for weighing salt or yeast for example
* Ability to switch display between lbs and oz or kg and grams whilst in use
* Often weigh up to 11lbs/5kg but do check as not all do
* Look out for the position of the LCD display, if you are likely to place big trays or cooking tins on the scales could you still read the display easily

Useful Features of Mechanical (Traditional) Design Food Scales
Look out for our * this will highlight to you a point that might require extra consideration before making your choice
Features tend to be related to the design of the scales rather than features over and above its primary function of weighing food or ingredients.
Materials used for the weighing container are typically plastic, stainless steel, chromed metal or glass.
* The weighing container design can vary from a shallow dish to a bowl or a useful measuring jug for liquids
* Often they can measure weights up to 11lbs/5kg but do check as not all do
* Accuracy to + or – ½ oz (13g)
* High capacity scales up to 22lbs/5kg available, but accuracy may be reduced to + or – 2oz (50g)

For the traditional balance weight food scale there is little to be found in the way of extra useful features, variations in color, material and size to an extent are all that varies.
However in general their weighing capacity is lower than that of other types of kitchen weighing scales, typically 2lbs/1kg as against the more generous 11lbs/5kg of most other spring balance and digital scales, so do check if you are likely to want to weigh larger amounts
The shape, material and capacity of the weigh pan or scoop can vary somewhat
* You may only get one set of weights in either pounds/ounces or
kilograms/grams, so do check
* Limited maximum weighing capacity often not more than 2lbs/1kg
* Requires a certain amount of skill inclding mental calculations for multiple ingredients.
* Robust, should last a lifetime, no batteries required.
